Digital Fundus Photography:
Digital photography of the inside of the eye is used to follow subtle changes in the health of the eye related to glaucoma, very small freckles in the back of the eye (watching for the same type of change we all watch for with freckles on our skin), diabetic eye disease, vascular changes related to high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol and macular degeneration.

Nerve Fiber Layer Analysis:
This analysis is used for very early detection of damage to the optic nerve from glaucoma in patients who are glaucoma suspects. We also utilize this technology to help us insure that the patients that we do treat for glaucoma are getting the maximum benefit and protection from their medical and/or surgical treatment.

Corneal Topography:
This technology is used to detect and follow contour irregularities on the surface of the cornea, the clear front tissue of the eye in front of the pupil. This is very useful in custom fitting our contact lens patients as well as following our patients with corneal conditions such as keratoconus, Fuchs' dystrophy, and irregular astigmatism. It is also critical in evaluating and counseling our patients who are inquiring about refractive surgery options such as LASIK and LASEK.

Corneal Pachymetry:
This instrument is used to ultrasonically measure the thickness of the cornea, the clear front tissue of the eye in front of the pupil. Many new studies have shown the importance of this measurement in determining if a patient has glaucoma and in setting target treatment pressures in the eye for patients with glaucoma. It is also critical in evaluating and counseling our patients who are inquiring about refractive surgery options such as LASIK and LASEK.

FOCUS ON DRY EYE

One of the most common conditions we treat in our office is dry eye.
• Symptoms include: general eye irritation, grittiness, scratchiness, burning, a feeling that something is in the eye, and excessive watering (as a reflex response to the underlying dryness)
• Causes of dry eye: Improper balance of tear production versus tear drainage and/or a change in the biochemical make-up of the tear film.
        - Environmental influences – pollution, dry heat during the winter, dry air conditioned air in the summer, blowing air in the car or from ceiling fans
        - Systemic medications – antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications, birth control pills…
        - Systemic conditions – arthritis, lupus, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, crohn’s disease…
        - Hormonal changes – peri or post menopausal changes
        - Eye lid inflammation/infection
• Treatments are specifically tailored to managing the underlying cause(s) – Please feel free to call our office to schedule an office visit with one of our doctors and remember to specifically discuss any of your symptoms or concerns. We are here to help. Remember, most health insurance plans will cover your visit when it is related to a health oriented issue such as dry eye.
